How to Start a Podcast

In this strategy session, Adam takes us through the benefits of podcasts, the tools you’ll need to begin, and a basic strategy to get you established. To get a simple overview, keep on scrolling.

Up until five years ago, podcasts weren’t really a popular mode of advertising and marketing strategy… but then, lots of investors chipped in and podcasting has boomed.

Why Podcasts?

There are three main reasons podcasts are important for businesses these days.

First, it’s good for communication. The whole point of business is to communicate with your audience, and podcasts open you up to a whole realm of people within your target group that haven’t heard of you yet. They listen to podcasts while they exercise or drive the car and they are interested in learning about what you do and how you can help them improve their lives.

Second, podcasts are good for content. We’ve talked a lot about how content is a machine that must always be fed. You can use podcasts as a new mode of providing quality content for your audience by answering their questions, interviewing other experts in your industry, or providing tips that better your audience’s life.

Third, it’s good for connections. This is a widely overlooked benefit of podcasts. They can open you up to connecting with others in your field. You can reach out (yes, cold-calls) and offer a highlight spot on your podcast. It allows them to gain the benefit of extra exposure as well as the opportunity for you to get to know them and build trust (and maybe a new customer).

Tools to Get Started

The tools to start a podcast are really not that complicated or extensive. All you’ll need is:

  • A phone to record
  • Headphones for excellent speaker/recording quality
  • Anchor.fm (100% free podcasting host with editing tools, analytics, and promotion)

  1. Make it easy for guests to share your podcast episodes on their social media.
  2. Share soundbites to highlight portions of your episodes.
  3. Have at least 3 episodes completed before your launch day.

Video 2: your best guest interview or industry-specific tips

Video 3: a topic that directly correlates to your brand

  1. Submit podcasts to other podcast players (anchor.fm already distributes to three others, but the more the better!).
  2. Throw a party after two weeks and encourage your friends and family to leave reviews (lots of interaction helps your podcast get featured and have better ranking)
  3. Transcribe the audio of shorter podcasts with Rev.com ($1/min.). For longer episodes, simply write out quick show notes summarizing the content of the podcast.
  4. Host a giveaway or content for your listeners to receive swag.
  5.  Mention other brands or businesses and tell them they’ve been featured. It may turn into a good relationship where you swap favors and they’ll feature you also.
  6. Be a guest on other podcasts.
  7. Convert your audio to a YouTube video. Linking the two across different platforms can only help your Google reputation and ranking.
